Back to the History of the Poinsettia:
December 12th This was the date of the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779 -1851), son of a French physician and the first US Ambassador to Mexico from 1825-29 who brought this native Central American plant to the US. Poinsett, who later founded the Smithsonian Institution, had attended medical school, but was particularly interested in botany. When he visited the Taxco del Alacon area of southern Mexico in 1828, he was fascinated by the brilliant red “flowers” blooming in the tropical highlands during the short days of winter. He immediately sent cuttings back to his own greenhouses on his Greenville, South Carolina plantation to propagate. He gave them away to friends and botanical gardens, and eventually a plant made it to Robert Buist, a Pennsylvania nurseryman who is thought to be the first person to have sold the plant under its botanical name, Euphorbia pulcherrima. The common name “poinsettia” came into general usage in the mid 1830’s.

The tiny central flowers in cyathia,
surrounded by colorful bracts.

Native to the mountains on the Pacific side of Mexico and Guatemala, this plant in the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) was used by the ancient Aztecs to make a purplish dye from the colorful “flowers” for use in textiles and cosmetics, and made the milky sap into a preparation for treating fevers. The showy, colored parts of the “flowers” are actually colored bracts (modified leaves) and the real flowers (reproductive parts) are in the little yellow parts (the cup-shaped cyathia) in the center. Nowadays, the traditionally red bracts against the dark green leaves make this a favorite as a Christmas decoration, although poinsettias now come in a variety of flower colors including white, cream, salmon pink, rose, scarlet, mauve, and streaked or mottled. There are over 100 varieties of poinsettias available, including some with orange, pale green, cream and marbled leaves instead of the normal bright green leaves. Most commercial cultivars have much wider bracts than the species.

Poinsettia now comes in a huge
variety of colors.

This subtropical evergreen or semi-deciduous shrub is somewhat temperamental and rather particular about temperature. It does not do well when temperatures get below 50°F and its lifespan as a container plant is shortened when temperatures go above 70°F. Flowering is initiated by short days and long nights (12-14 hours) in fall, so it can be difficult to get a plant to rebloom unless it is kept in a room without any supplemental light after sunset for about two months in the fall. Any incidental light during this time will interrupt the flowering process. Watering should be reduced during this time.

In nature, E. pulcherrima is a very rangy, almost weedy-looking plant, with long, thin, sprawling stems up to 16 feet tall, each topped with colorful bracts. The tree or shrub is covered with leaves in the summer rainy season, but normally flowers when leafless or nearly so in winter. In order to produce short, bushy plants with multiple flowers, growers can apply plant hormones, graft two different varieties to improve branching, or infect plants with a phytoplasma that causes the proliferation of axillary buds.
Poinsettia needs moist, well-drained soil, but cannot tolerate sitting in water. Drain any excess water from the pot or saucer it sits in. The leaves and branches of this plant are somewhat brittle and susceptible to breakage. Broken parts are easily rooted in sand to create new plants.
The milky sap from poinsettia can be irritating to individuals who are sensitive to the latex, but the plants are not deadly if ingested – it is most likely to just cause vomiting or diarrhea. Sap can cause temporary blindness if it gets in the eye, however, so care should be taken when handling these plants.

Welke's House of Roses and
Ronald McDonald House Charities

In a previous blog we announced that we were working on a way for our customers to be able to make a donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities(RMHC). In the left hand column of Welkes.com. A RMHC logo has been added to include a "donate here" button that will take you right to their website. In addition, in order to make it even easier, we have added an option at the check-out section within the order process. Just a simple click of a button helps provide a home-away-from-home for families during the medical treatment of their seriously ill children. While at the check-out section look for the Ronald McDonald House Charities Logo and select a donation of your choice starting at $1.

Giving back to the community that has blessed our business for the past 100 years motivates us to continue to do everything we can to help these families during their time of crisis. The entire staff at Welke's House of Roses feels fortunate to be in the floral industry because flowers express the words that are sometimes difficult to express. This Sunday, May 10th, Mother's Day, we will be giving roses to each of the Mother's staying at the Ronald McDonald House over the Mother's Day holiday in order to express what words cannot.

Welke’s House of Roses Says; "Pick 3 Spend $50 Save The Economy!"

If you have not heard of the 3/50 Project…this Blog will open your eyes to the importance of shopping at locally owned businesses. The 3/50 Project tag-line is “Save your local economy three stores at a time.” The projects goal is to promote shopping in locally owned businesses while thanking customers for the positive impact that decision has on a local economy.

As a locally owned flower shop, since 1901, Welke’s House of Roses wants to share the details of this project in order to raise public awareness of buying from local businesses and how this will help our local economy.

3/50 Project

3 - The 3 in the 3/50 project asks consumers to think about which three stores they would miss if they disappeared, then remind them to shop locally. Welke’s House of Roses has been serving our community for over 100 years. Think of buying locally before you pick up the phone to call 800 Flowers, Pro Flowers or even Teleflora or FTD Headquarters.

50 – The 50 comes from the suggestion to spend a mere $50 per month in locally owned retail stores. If only half of the employed population made three - fifty dollar purchases it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. That would make a huge impact in our sagging economy. Did you know that $68 remains in the local economy for every $100 spent in locally owned stores. By contrast, only $43 per $100 remains local when spent in national chains.

Think about the 3/50 Project before picking up the phone this Mother’s Day. Calling 800 flowers, Teleflora.com or Pro Flowers will not help our local economy. Call Welke’s House of Flowers or shop on-line at www.welkes.com

Factors Affecting Rose Prices

A simple case of supply and demand

  • Valentine's Day inspires the heaviest demand for long-stemmed roses, and several rosebuds must be sacrificed to create a single long-stemmed rose.

  • After the Christmas season demand for red roses is filled, growers need 50-70 days to produce enough roses for Valentine's Day.

  • Winter's shorter daylight hours and higher energy costs hamper efforts to grow large rose crops.

  • Inclement weather often requires extreme measures to ensure that flowers are delivered in time.

  • To fulfill the tremendous number of orders for Valentine's Day flowers, florists have to hire additional help, work longer hours and acquire extra delivery vehicles and drivers.

In short, roses in February are every bit as special as you would expect.
